We’re not asking you to never eat sugar again!
But when it comes to tooth decay, it’s not just how much sugar you have, it’s how often your teeth are exposed to it.
Sugar is readily available in drinks, sweets, snacks and everyday foods; a sweetened coffee, a mid-morning biscuit, then a fizzy drink or dilute juice sipped throughout the afternoon… it’s easy for those moments to add up without us noticing.
Each time you have sugar, bacteria in plaque produce acids that attack your teeth. Frequent sipping and grazing mean fewer breaks for your teeth to recover, increasing the risk of decay and, eventually, toothache.
A few simple habits can help:
💧 Choose water between meals instead of sipping juice or sugary fizzy drinks.
🍽️ Keep sugary treats to mealtimes where possible.
🍎 Plan ahead with snacks such as whole fresh fruit, plain nuts or cheese and crackers.
📝 Notice how often you reach for something sugary. A food and drink diary over a few days can reveal patterns, include the times, too!
You don’t have to be perfect. Small changes to everyday habits can make a big difference.

💙Meet Michelle
Michelle is a long-standing and much-loved member of our team, with several important roles across the practice.
You may recognise her friendly voice from the telephone, see her welcoming patients on reception or have her support you as one of our Treatment Coordinators.
When an accident meant Michelle needed to work remotely for a while, she found another very special way to support the practice, by writing and illustrating a beautiful collection of children’s books for our younger patients.
Outside work, Michelle loves spending time with her family and granddaughters, and being with her two little dogs.
